Washable rugs have revolutionised the approach to keeping carpets clean. No more waiting for dry cleaners and paying £80–150 for cleaning — you pop the rug in the washing machine, start the programme, and an hour later you have a fresh, fragrant rug like new.

Can every rug be machine-washed?

No. Washable rugs are a specific product category — with machine-wash certification, lightweight construction, and materials resistant to temperature and spinning. Washing an ordinary rug in a machine ends in fibre damage or washing machine breakdown.

Features of a washable rug:

  • Weight max 6 kg (fits in a 7 kg washing machine)
  • Latex or cotton backing (not rubber — rubber delaminates)
  • Pile max 35 mm
  • Clear "machine wash 30°C" information in the description

How to wash step by step

  1. Hoovering — before washing, vacuum the rug thoroughly on both sides. Otherwise dirt and dust turn into muddy sludge in the machine.
  2. Stains — treat spot stains with stain remover 15 minutes before placing in the machine.
  3. Folding — roll the rug into a cylinder, place in the machine with the drum facing up. Don't fold "into squares" — you'll crease the fibres.
  4. Programme — rug wash or delicate cycle, 30°C, spin max 600 rpm. No pre-wash, no bleach.
  5. Detergent — gentle liquid for delicate fabrics (Perwoll, Lovela). Never powder — it leaves marks.
  6. Drying — hang on a line to dry. NEVER tumble dryer — temperatures above 40°C destroy latex.

Who are washable rugs suitable for

Ideal for:

  • Families with children (crayons, juice, plasticine)
  • Dog and cat owners (fur, puddles, muddy paws from outdoors)
  • Allergy sufferers (washing rinses out mites and pollen)
  • High-traffic rooms — kitchen, hallway, dining room

Less recommended for:

  • Formal reception rooms — choose wool or microfibre for a "premium" effect
  • Adults-only rooms (bedroom without pets) — full wash resistance isn't needed here

FAQ — frequently asked questions

How many times can I wash a washable rug? Italpouf models withstand 50+ full washes without losing shape. That's statistically 8–10 years of normal use (washing every 2–3 months).

What if my rug won't fit in the washing machine? Choose models up to 6 kg (check weight in product description — all our washable rugs have this information). Larger ones need washing at self-service laundries (12 kg machine).

Does washing change the rug's colour? First wash may rinse out 2–3% of pigment (slightly lighter shade). Subsequent washes no longer change the colour.

Can I wash it together with other items? No — the rug takes up the full drum, washing with clothing will result in neither getting properly clean.
