Industrial style is gaining more and more followers. Born in New York in the 1950s, it has undergone many changes over the years, particularly after reaching Europe. Here, the style has been adapted over recent decades to London, Berlin, Amsterdam, old industrial complexes, abandoned factories, disused power stations, and long-forgotten artisan workshops.

Nowadays it's no longer just about lofts, former warehouses and open-plan spaces—the loft-industrial mood has now entered homes around the world. What's striking is the blend of simplicity and vintage, which instantly give an interior character whilst maintaining clean lines and practical, functional design.

Industrial style, so-called chic, is one of the eclectic styles that can be successfully combined with other styles, for example with Scandinavian or shabby chic.

Without doubt, the current trend is moving us away from shabby chic, which often becomes a bit too fussy and formulaic with its "everything painted white" approach, towards the loft-industrial style, with a flavour of the mid-century factory.

Factory elements: materials and finishes

Industrial elements, the "old factory" style are the most important components, but certainly buying two or three items isn't enough to create this atmosphere.

The space and structure of the home contribute to the charm and industrial style: pillars, beams, bricks and pipes left exposed, large windows used as partition walls, materials such as concrete and iron left in their natural state, old wood in its raw form are elements that best characterise this style.

High ceilings, mezzanines and resin floors are welcome and help create the right atmosphere. But don't be afraid—with the help of a professional, renovation and refurbishment isn't as difficult as it seems.

Natural lighting: large windows

The amount of natural light that enters the interior is very important for this style. Therefore, even if you can't change the external window frames, you can install glass walls that help separate spaces without visually dividing rooms and don't block the light coming through the windows.

The way is clear for glass walls as dividers between the kitchen and living area or the bedroom and dressing room... Windows fit brilliantly with this style and are best with iron frames or painted black.

Colours

In this style, light and dark colours work together, but without overdoing it with overly bold shades.

Using natural, aged wood combined with dark metal is a very good idea for emphasising this style. Consequently, shades of brown and grey combined with black will be ideal against a white backdrop.
