Shaggy rugs are the definition of cosiness — long, soft pile creates a cloud-like effect underfoot that's unmatched in the bedroom or relaxation zone. But shaggy is also a rug that requires specific knowledge: where to place it, how to clean it and how to recognise a good model.
How shaggy rugs differ from other types
A classic rug has pile of 4–10 mm. Shaggy starts at 20 mm and reaches up to 60 mm. The longer the pile, the greater the comfort, but also more work when hoovering and a greater tendency to accumulate dust.
- Classic shaggy (20–35 mm) — versatile, works in living rooms and bedrooms
- Extra shaggy (40–60 mm) — fur-like effect, bedroom only, never high-traffic areas
- Shaggy frisé / textured — curled pile, less visible footprints and hoover marks
Where shaggy works (and where it doesn't)
Yes: bedroom, coffee area in the living room, teenager's room, study. Anywhere you walk barefoot or in socks with moderate foot traffic.
No: hallway (dust gets twisted into the pile), kitchen (impossible to remove grease), under a desk with a wheeled chair (destroys the structure), living room with large moulting dogs (impossible to hoover out pet hair).
Shaggy care — step by step
- Hoovering — minimum twice a week, use a hoover with height adjustment or a carpet brush. NEVER a rotating brush — it twists and destroys the pile.
- Beating — every 2–3 months take the rug outside and beat it on a line, ideally in the morning when the pile is stiffer from the cold.
- Stain removal — liquid stains: paper towel + lightly damp cloth with baby soap. DON'T scrub — you'll push dirt deeper.
- Washing — models up to 35 mm with a "machine washable" certificate can be washed at 30°C; longer shaggy rugs require dry cleaning only.
Non-slip backing — why it matters
Shaggy without a non-slip backing "wanders" across laminate flooring and vinyl planks. Choose models with latex backing or purchase a non-slip mat. This is a safety issue, particularly in the bedroom and children's room.
